Sulcata Station's Humans
- Steph Moore -- Webmaster, reluctant bureaucrat, and food fairy to a variety of critters including torts, turtles, cats, snakes, and tropical fish.
- Alan W. Kerr -- The Station's brains, brawn, videographer, and carpenter extraordinaire. Also occasionally feeds the cats, mainly to perplex them.
Our Credentials:
We have kept sulcata tortoises since 1997. We are members of The World Chelonian Trust, a nonprofit organization devoted to conservation of turtle and tortoise species worldwide. We are also charter members of The Rio Grande Turtle and Tortoise Club, a local nonprofit organization based in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Why did we start Sulcata Station?
We acquired our first two sulcata tortoises as hatchlings in 1997. While we were learning to take care of our new pets, we quickly found that while although we could find care information from a variety of sources (books, web sites, or given out by veterinarians and pet store employees), much of it was confusing, contradictory, outdated, inaccurate, or just plain wrong.
Using the Internet, we were able to communicate with knowledgeable reptile keepers all across the world, and we learned directly from them what works -- and what doesn't -- in caring for sulcata tortoises. Since there was an obvious need to make this care information more widely available, we started the Sulcata Station web site in 1999 to share our ever-expanding knowledge with other, newer sulcata keepers, no matter what their level of expertise.
The information contained in this website is a compilation of advice provided by numerous sulcata keepers around the world, as well as our experiences with our own sulcata tortoises. We are grateful to all those folks who shared their time and their wisdom with us when we were starting out, and we hope to be able to pass on that gift to others.
The Station's 15 Minutes of Fame
Sulcata Station was mentioned in an Albuquerque Journal article that focused on the Rio Grande Turtle & Tortoise Club and "backyard turtles" in the Albuquerque area.
